speaking of animal print...

You should really check out Animalarium, an exploration of the finest in art, illustration, crafts, and design from around the world featuring animals both real and fantastic. This blog has everything: dinosaurs,  dragons,  unicorns,  yetis and, my personal favorite, mermaids. Of course, real-live animals feature heavily, as well. You can browse the archive by animal, artist, or media:  advertising,  alphabets,  collage,  stop motion, and typography are some of my favorite categories. I could look at it for hours... and I have!

multi-touch finger paintings by Evan Roth

Slide to Unlock

In this, the year 2012, it sometimes sort of feels like everythings been done before. You know what I mean? Like, how can there be new kinds of art/music/poetry? Someones probably thought of it already. To me, these finger paintings by Evan Roth, which he did using tracing paper and ink over his smartphone while performing routine operations, feel inherently new. That is to say, this kind of art couldnt have existed ten years ago: 21st century Action Painting.

Taking something familiar and mundane and turning it into art--how Warhol of him. They also sort of remind me of Franz Kline... what do you think?

its snowing!

the first real snow of the season! Public schools are cancelled (not that that matters much to us, but its nice to know that all the children have the day off). I plan to spend the day knitting, drinking tea, and eating so many pizza rolls. Later, I think Felix and I are going to try out the new baby toboggan that his yia yia got him for christmas. So exciting!

whats your spirit color?

A few years ago my friend brittany explained to me to the concept of a spirit color. It doesnt have to be your favorite color, but its a color youre inexplicably drawn to, one that pops into your eyeballs more readily than any other hue, that speaks to, well, your spirit. Since as long as I can remember, Ive been in love with this shade of blue that, thanks to crayola, I learned to call cerulean. It reminds me of swimming pools in the middle of the summer, and makes me think of mermaids. I cant resist it! Whats your spirit color?

Moshik Nadav typography

Take a look at this beautiful new typeface created by Moshik Nadav. According to Trendlands Ani Tzenkova, Paris is intended to be used by the most popular fashion magazines and luxury brands. Of course, type design as an art is based on the idea that different contexts require different fonts in order to evoke the proper mood. Like clothing, certain fonts can be dressed up or down and used virtually anywhere (helvetica, times new roman...) but I love the idea of a luxury font, like a typographical ball gown, to be worn only on typographical special occasions. The entire Parisian alphabet is beautiful, but Im especially attracted to the lowercase letters:
